Top Soil (local)
This economical product can be used to shape the land. It can also be used to fill in low spots or to pack the bottom of a raised beds -it should however not be mixed in with higher-quality soil.
Not recommended as a stand-alone grow medium as it has poor structure and can be prone to compacting, and has low nutrient content.
Top soil is the upper, outermost layer of native soil. It typically contains a natural mixture of sand, silt, and clay, plus some organic matter in various proportions. It has formed over millions of years from rock decomposition, wind, and water movement. Considering the geological history, top soil around Whitehorse is ''young'' and fairly poor. It is not equivalent to ''black earth''.
Extracted top soil comes from a borrow pit. Grubbed top soil comes from grubbing the surface layer when developing land, e.g. for residential buildings. Extracted top soil is slightly higher in organic matter and lower in silt than grubbed top soil. Both are sifted and mostly devoid of debris, but grubbed top soil tends to be ''cleaner''.
